Thinking about the Biodiversity Loss in This Changing World

چکیده
Extinction of species has been a recurrent phenomenon in the history our planet, but it was generally outweighed course quite long geological time by appearance new species, except, especially, for five geologically short times when so-called “Big Five” mass extinctions occurred. Could current decline biodiversity be considered as signal an ongoing, human-driven sixth extinction? This note briefly examines some issues related to: (i) The hypothesized extinction rate and magnitude contemporary global loss; (ii) challenges comparing them to background past Big Five events; (iii) considering effects main anthropogenic stressors on ecosystems, including risk emergence pandemic diseases. A comparison between Pleistocene fauna dynamics with present defaunation process cascading recent actions ecosystem structure functioning suggests that habitat degradation, fragmentation, alien introduction are important increasing negative impact exerted anthropogenic-driven climate changes their connected effects. In addition, ecological such urbanization, landscapes, wildlife trade, creating opportunities virus transmission augmenting human contact wild among factors triggering

Pædiatrics in This Changing World
I BELIEVE that there are times when it is useful and helpful to review certain aspects of medicine, and the changes that have occurred in paediatrics during the past four decades are such, I think, as to warrant some evaluation of the present position and an attempt perhaps to forecast the future position of paediatrics within the framework of general medicine. Certain diseases which were commo...
متن کاملCryptic biodiversity in a changing world
DNA studies are revealing the extent of hidden, or cryptic, biodiversity. Two new studies challenge paradigms about cryptic biodiversity and highlight the importance of adding a historical and biogeographic dimension to biodiversity research.
متن کاملBiodiversity matters in a changing world.
It is now widely accepted that the climate of our planet is changing, but it is still hard to predict the consequences of these changes on ecosystems. The impact is worst at the poles, with scientists concerned that impacts at lower latitudes will follow suit. Canada has a great responsibility and potential for studying the effects of climate changes on the ecological dynamics, given its geogra...
متن کاملThinking about Change: An Integrative Approach for Examining Cognition in a Changing World.
We are currently experiencing shifts in climate at rates not previously recorded. One important aspect of this change is a tendency toward extremes--extremes in temperature and moisture, both within and among years. Numerous studies focus on the physiological consequences of environmental change, especially in terms of ectothermic taxa's thermal regime and use of habitat. For many species, thou...
